New Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital Opening 2025

UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center is opening an 11-story, state-of-the-art inpatient rehabilitation hospital in spring 2025. The new hospital will include 78 rehabilitation beds and the most advanced technology – all designed to promote functional activity at every turn.

The new facility will help us enhance our focus on neurorehabilitation for patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other conditions. A rooftop garden, terrain park, basketball court, simulated city street, and wheelchair skills area will give patients the opportunity to practice meaningful hobbies and activities important to their recovery. Each rehabilitation floor will include open therapy gyms, private therapy rooms, a day room, and a central hub designed to enhance team communication. Patient rooms will be equipped with overhead lifts and patient repositioners on each bed to assist staff. This new facility will strengthen our reputation as a leading provider of neurorehabilitation care.

Why Our Rehab Team Loves Working at UAB Medicine

  • Emily Phillips

UAB Medicine is the best place for my role because I have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of patients with different conditions, personal backgrounds, and needs. The environment fostered by UAB allows me to develop truly personalized care plans for each patient, treating them as more than just their diagnosis and giving them the one-on-one care they deserve.

  • Matheus De Souza

UAB’s physical therapy doctoral program initially brought me to Alabama. During the program, I had an opportunity to work with researchers at Spain Rehab and immediately was drawn to its environment and culture. I was always interested in this setting, and my passion for it has only grown since coming on board as a physical therapist. I am grateful to have a system of support from my co-workers that encourages and empowers me to progress in my profession.
